Discovery Fire Sprinklers has been appointed by AEM to deliver the active fire protection systems for BAE Systems’ new Project Spartan research and development facility in Barrow-in-Furness.
Approved earlier this year by Westmorland and Furness Council, the landmark development forms part of the UK’s Dreadnought submarine programme and is designed to support and safeguard the future of the nation’s submarine production. The purpose-built complex, located at Devonshire Dock Quay, will consolidate around 750 BAE employees into a modern workspace incorporating engineering areas, research laboratories, training facilities and collaboration zones.
Working on behalf of AEM, DFS is providing the full design, installation and certification of the building’s active fire protection system, engineered and installed in accordance with NFPA 13 OH3 commercial sprinkler standards. This system ensures robust protection across the facility’s multi-use environments, from technical floors and office space to shared amenities, while meeting the stringent safety and compliance demands of a defence-grade installation.
The project represents a significant milestone for Discovery Fire Sprinklers, showcasing its capability to deliver complex fire protection solutions within highly regulated, mission-critical sectors. As part of BAE Systems’ long-term investment in Barrow and the UK’s defence infrastructure, the Nuclear Berth Support (NBS) building underpins both innovation and national security, and DFS is proud to play a role in protecting it.
